Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Baruten Local Government Area (LGA), located in Kwara State, is part of Nigeria’s diverse geopolitical landscape, with a rich natural resource base that includes significant oil reserves. The exploration and exploitation of oil in Baruten have brought both opportunities and challenges. While oil exploration promises economic benefits, it also introduces a complex set of geopolitical issues, such as land ownership disputes, environmental degradation, and tensions between local communities and government authorities. The exploration activities often lead to the encroachment on traditional lands, while the distribution of oil wealth can exacerbate regional inequalities (Khalid & Ibraheem, 2023).
This study seeks to assess the geopolitical implications of oil exploration in Baruten LGA, focusing on the social, economic, and political consequences. It will explore how the distribution of oil wealth influences local governance, the relationship between different ethnic groups, and the broader geopolitical dynamics within Kwara State. The research will also examine the environmental impact of oil exploration on the local community and agricultural activities, as well as the role of government in managing these challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The exploration of oil in Baruten LGA has sparked a range of geopolitical issues, including disputes over land rights, environmental concerns, and tensions between the local population and external investors. The benefits of oil exploration are often unevenly distributed, leading to social and economic inequalities. This study aims to assess the geopolitical implications of oil exploration in Baruten, with a focus on its effects on local communities, governance, and the environment.
